Are you currently experiencing the feeling of being stuck in a rut?
You know you want more out of life but anything other than this current state seems impossible!

If you are, you are not alone!

This is a symptom my clients come to me with on a regular basis and I have certainly been there myself in the past.
The reason I use the term symptom is because there are a number of deeper causes that have led you to this state, therefore this ‘rut’ is a secondary symptom of those things.

The main reason a person feels stuck is because when they think about moving forward, it feels quite overwhelming and they don’t know where to start or what steps to take.

The good news is, there is a way to break free!

Here are some tips to help you get there;

Don’t wait for motivation, create it!
When you are experiencing feeling ‘stuck’ you will often lose motivation to not only break free, but to do anything. A common mistake is that people then wait until they feel motivated before taking action and therefore get nowhere. When you are in this state, it is important to find a way to increase your own motivation levels.

A good way of doing this is to start filling up your calendar.
Having a reason to get out of bed each day will naturally increase your energy levels.

Often when a person is feeling stuck, they separate themselves from others thinking they will be a burden, however, connection is actually one of the best medicines! Feeling connected to others immediately lifts your vibration so no need to hide - get out and start living!

Now I’m not suggesting anything drastic like signing yourself up for a marathon just yet!

Big achievements come one step at a time, one day at a time

So start off with something as simple as coffee with a friend, a walk in the park with your dog or visiting your younger cousin/niece/nephew and introducing them to your inner child.

Get honest with yourself and others

An important step to break free from a rut is to get really honest with yourself about why you are feeling stuck.

Some of the most common causes are:

  • Holding onto the past (experiences, traumas, failures)

  • A victim mentality (letting influences outside of yourself control your happiness)

  • Having a lack of purpose / not knowing your purpose

  • Being too caught up in the past or future rather than the present

Now that you are being honest with yourself, the next step is to remove the mask and be honest with the world.

Pretending that everything is ok when it’s not and having to hide the real you takes up so much energy!

Start to be authentic and you will start to feel better. People who care about you can’t help you if they don’t know something’s wrong and like I said, we’ve all been there at some point so they will be happy to help in whatever way they can.

Overcome the causes

There are many forms of help to assist you in overcoming some of or all of the causes mentioned above such as therapists, psychologists and life coaches.

Life wasn’t meant to be easy. We’re here to be challenged and to grow.

Nobody can master all of life’s challenges on their own so it’s really beneficial to find someone experienced to assist you just as you would go to a hairdresser for your hair or an accountant for your tax because these aren’t fields you’re experienced in.

Everyone has a special gift, a purpose, so let them do theirs so you can begin to focus on yours!

Move forward

Once you have overcome/let go of the blockages that were holding you back you will have a clearer mindset and feel ready to move forward.

You may like to get further help with this or you may feel ready to go out and do this on your own.

Either way, it’s important to set some achievable goals toward your ideal future.

Goal setting can sometimes be difficult to do on your own so you may like to get together with a friend and be inspired by each other or lookout for a local workshop to attend.

Generally the format I use for myself and clients is to start off with a bigger vision that is 5-10 years out then break it down into smaller goals I can achieve over the next 12 months to work toward that vision.

I find it’s important to have both a larger vision and smaller goals because you are more inspired to work toward your goals when there is a bigger picture or outcome that you are working towards, however, if you only had a bigger picture without smaller realistic goals you will never take any action.

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog. I really hope you got something out of it and most importantly you remember you’re not alone!
